World's first vegetarian city...... Print E-mail

The Belgian city of Ghent will encourage residents not to eat meat on Thursdays, highlighting the environmental and health benefits of a reduced meat diet.

Cutting one day of meat consumption may cut greenhouse gas emissions for the city of Ghent by as much as 18% one of the promoters of Ghents veggie day told reporters. The town is not forcing its citizens to become vegetarian, but rather encouraging citizens to choose not to eat meat on Thursdays.

Meat Is Not Green! Print E-mail

According to a 2006 U.N. report, the meat industry produces more greenhouse-gas emissions than all the cars, trucks, planes, and ships in the world combined—providing further evidence that meat's not green. These gases worsen climate change and might lead to catastrophic disasters—like droughts, floods, hurricanes, rising sea levels, and disease outbreaks—unless we drastically reduce the amounts emitted into the atmosphere.

Last year, Brazil announced that in the 12 months to July, it had lost 12,000 square kilometers of the Amazon rainforest, mainly to cattle ranchers and soy producers supplying European markets with animal feed. There is water scarcity in large parts of the world, yet livestock rearing can use up to 200 times more water a kilogram of meat produced than is used in growing wheat.

We can get our daily nutritional needs from a well balanced vegetarian diet and you could be helping the environment at the same time. Why not give our range of vegetarian ready meals a try, also available at selected Tesco and Asda superstores.

Vegetarians……the brainiest Brits? Print E-mail

Vegetarianism proved to be the intelligent choice thanks to a triple triumph for the veggie team who appeared on BBC One’s Test The Nation back in September! A 40-strong team of veggies came out top as the studio team winners of the hugely popular National IQ Challenge. And, proving that a veggie diet not only is good for the body but the mind too, the individual contestant with the highest overall IQ was also vegetarian!

Across the UK it was good news for vegetarianism as well. The total participating audience scores (over 80,000 individuals took part using the internet) gave the veggies the edge over non-veggies in the IQ stakes too.
